The Pastor As Spiritual Guide
Published in Paperback by Upper Room (September, 1998)
Author: Howard L. Rice
Average review score:

Good effort to find a new pastoral model
Commendations to Howard Rice and his editors for The Pastor as Spiritual Guide. Rice taught spiritual formation for a number of years and attempts to put his thought into a systems approach to congregational ministry. In many ways he succeeds, particularly as he deals with the everyday actions of pastors and the normal problems of churches. Where Rice slips is in the biblical foundation for his approach. I wanted Rice to use the Bible, to show a biblical basis for his work, to develop especially that biblical foundation for pastoral authority. That is not there, though any pastor should be able to read this book and grow from its insights. And any pastor can provide the biblical texts he or she most often quotes concerning call to ministry. I am not aware of any other contemporary attempts to relate spiritual guidance to the totality of ministry. Do read the book. Maybe the sequel is in you and awaits birth.

A Call to Spiritual Guidance
Howard Rice invites pastors to step away from the task-driven agenda of pastoral ministry to think about the larger need for spiritual guidance. I find his work very encouraging as he deals realistically with the demands pastors face. Particularly helpful is the chapter on worship and spiritual guidance for in this chapter Rice reminds readers that all aspects of worship should invite participants to listen for God. Rice notes that all of worship is an invitation. Rice also writes about spiritual guidance and the administration of the church.

Very helpful book. It opens up new ways to think about ministry and the church.

Pastor Hsi
Published in Paperback by Christian Focus Publications (May, 1997)
Authors: Geraldine Taylor and Mrs. Howard Taylor
Average review score:

Excellent!
This is one of the best Christian biographies available, indeed as are all those of the late Mrs. Howard (Geraldine) Taylor - though sadly, nearly all are out of print.

This book describes how a typical Chinese scholar was touched with the Gospel and went on to be a powerful Christian influence over his entire province.

If you can, look in a used bookshop for the original, unabridged edition in two volumes (called - Pastor Hsi: One of China's Scholars, and Pastor Hsi: One of China's Christians) which is well worth the extra paper.

winning testimony of Chinese Billy Graham
This book tells the life story of Pastor Hsi, who was converted from a hard core Confucius scholar to a Christian who won thousands and saved many opium-smokers to health and new lives.

No doubt, any reader will wonder why Pastor Hsi's prayers were always answered, and no matter how difficult the financial situation was, there was always a solution to continue his ministry. I think, whoever reads the book will find the answer and many more for their own spiritual growth.

Anybody who wants to know about the history and lives in Central China in late nineteenth century should read this book. Also, the battles in spiritual world were depicted vividly and exemplified from many true stories in the book. Many people who doubt spirituality, or miracles, and those who want to find evidence for them, should read this book to see how real it can be.

There are so many things we could learn from the life of Pastor Hsi, a Chinese Billy Graham. It's up to you to explore and find out. Enjoy the journey!

Liberating
This book opens your mind to deep thought . The message that he shares in this book is truly inspiring and bring clarity to our jumbled minds. The goodness of life is right in front of us but we don't see the trees but for the forest. This is a master mind at his best. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Outstanding book offering help with life's challenges.
This is my favorite of Mr. Howard's many books. A book of practical advice and illustrative stories I have returned to it again and again for guidance and relief in the face of life challenges.

Patterns
Published in Hardcover by 1stBooks Library (September, 2002)
Author: Howard Steven Jitomir
Average review score:

An extremely compelling story
This book is definitely worth reading. The story line is easy to follow and compelling to continue. The characters are extremely well developed and draw you into the book. I especially enjoyed the "flashback" method of telling this story. At a time when the moral fiber of our society is eroding, it is refreshing to read a book that truly depicts the sometimes-difficult journey to becoming the people that we are. This book shows how despite adversity, each of us has the opportunity to develop into a caring, sensitive human being. This is the type of book that would be worthy of a book club discussion or a psychology class as the moral and ethical implications of the main character's actions are far-reaching and complex.

The solution to racism
This is a work of literature that deserves a wide audience. It does not just talk about life, and how we develop the patterns that affect ourselves and society, but discusses how to cure them.

It is written in a flashback form, taking us over several generations. It is a "Once you pick it up you can't put it down" book. Buy it.

Pigeons from Hell
Published in Hardcover by Eclipse Books (June, 1988)
Authors: Robert E. Howard and Scott Hampton
Average review score:

Pigeons From Hell
Printed in June, 1976, Pigeons From Hell is in excellent condition. I intend to continue to preserve it. Actually, the story Pigeons From Hell is but one story amidst a set of Robert E. Howard short stories. My interest was in tracking down the original novel which inspired what most critics seem to maintain as the greatest installment among the 67 Thriller TV show (1960-62) episodes. The purchase was economical, of the highest quality and punctual.

Worth the Search!
I've been hunting for this book sine it was released in 1988, and I was recently lucky enough to acquire a signed edition of the hardcover. All I can say is that it was worth both the wait and the search.

Pigeons From Hell is adapted from the classic Robert E. Howard short story by artist Scott Hampton. The story is a pretty straightforward southern-gothic ghost tale, with a little gore thrown in for good measure. Howard's prose is some of his best, and Hampton's art is breathtaking. His dark, moody paintings evoke a sense of isolation and terror that had me totally drawn into the story. I couldn't stop reading. The book also contains a foreward by noted horror author Ramsey Campbell. Highly recommended for horror fans!

Please Don't Call Me Human
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion (July, 1900)
Authors: Shuo Wang, Howard Goldblatt, and Wang Shuo
Average review score:

Kafka-esque. But I mean that in a good way
One of the funniest books I've read in a while, "Please Don't Call Me Human" goes way beyond being a satire of Chinese nationalism--it's an hysterical condemnation of how far people will go for fame. So original, each outrageous event is a huge surprise.

The Olympics of Humiliation
Don't Call Me Human is a shockingly fun read filled with off-color humor and disgusting detail. The plot revolves around a shady Beijing organization called MobCom, which is desperate to vindicate China's humiliating loss at the hands of an oafish American wrestler. MobCom's search for a modern-day Chinese hero who knows the secrets of the Boxers (who, among other things, mistakenly thought they were immune to the power of firearms) finds its unfortunate object in a Beijing pedicab driver named Tang Yuanbao. Written by China's most famous liumang (low-life slacker is an acceptable translation), Wang Shuo, the novel follows the miseducation and shameless promotion of Tang by MobCom, an endeavor which requires multiple press conferences ridiculously devoid of content, ballet lessons given by an octogenarian in an abandoned art gallery, an unbelievable mock-military excercise in which Tang single-handedly defeats more than one battalion, and even an eventual sex change. The rise and fall of Tang and his backers (who manage to consume 7,000 packages of instant noodles, 100 kilos of tea, and 14000 cigarettes in their first week of hardly working) is the best-told tale of slacking off and deep national/personal humiliation you're ever likely to read.

The Poems of Ossian and Related Works (The Ossianic Works of James Macpherson)
Published in Paperback by Edinburgh Univ Press (April, 1996)
Authors: James MacPherson, Howard Gaskill, and Fiona Stafford
Average review score:

A Classic
One of the greatest works of the 18th century. Thomas Jefferson read this book on a daily basis and extolled its merits. Unfortunately, the work was shrowded amidst questions about its "authenticity". It is a beautiful masterpiece, in my opinion. It does at times suffer from the excesses of 18th century sentimentality, but so does Tom Jones.

Well organized edition
In the 1760s James Macpherson wandered Scotland, collecting the Poems of Ossian, many apparently existing only verbally. The book is a classic, the poetry is incredible, and the work is almost entirely forgotten today. That's a shame. Howard Gaskill has done the world a favor by releasing a new edition of "Ossian". He does an excellent job of organizing the material, and provides detailed explanations of the various plots of the poems. A great book for those who enjoy epic poetry.

The Pointe Book: Shoes, Training and Technique
Published in Paperback by Princeton Book Co Pub (January, 1991)
Authors: Janice Barringer, Sarah Schlesinger, and David Howard
Average review score:

this is really helpful
since i have just started pointe this book has really helped me break in my shoes and give me really good excercises to stregthen my ankles. one of the people in this book is my ballet teacher so that is even better. if u have just started pointe or have been on it for a while or even if u dont do pointe this book is really interesting and helpful.

This is the most thorough and informative book on pointe!
When I first learned pointe, I studied at two different dance schools. My instructor at each school gave a short lecture on the foot and pointe dancing in general, and the majority of their presentations came from "The Pointe Book". I quickly went out and bought it and now as a teacher myself, I require my students to get and read "The Pointe Book". I have not found any other work to be as thorough and informative -- who knew that so much was involved in a pair of shoes?! If a student only reads part of the book, I would recommend the chapters on proper pointe shoe fitting and pointe-related injuries. The chapter laying out a sample pointe class has come in handy for some of my beginning work with students and also provides them with exercises to do on their own. My favorite chapter, though, would have to be Conversations on Pointe, which has pointe stories from many well-known dancers. It was great knowing that some of my opinions and experiences are also shared by some of the greats! Janice Barringer and Sarah Schlesinger have done all of us dancers a great favor with "The Pointe Book".

Prehospital Emergency Care (6th Edition)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (06 August, 1999)
Authors: Joseph J. Mistovich, Brent Q. Hafen, Keith J. Karren, Howard A. Wermam, and Howard A. Werman
Average review score:

Top of the Line for Basic Medical Providers
Prehospital emgergency care is the best book that I have read for EMT-B level care providers. I live in Ontario, Canada, where we do not have EMT's. We have paramedics and first responders. This book is a great first book for those getting into the emergency medicine profession. It covers the basics of the basics very well and very thoroughly. The pictures are clear and easy to understand and the language isn't too complicated to understand.
We used a version of this book for medical training in the fire service and it has proven itself to be a very practical and efficient learning tool. There are expanded areas in cetain chapters where the book goes above and beyond the level of knowledge that EMT-B level providers will need to know. It's always good to know more than you need to and this book helps tremendously with that. Those intending on pursuing their careers into more advanced paramedicine should consider making this book the foundation to their knowledge.

The CD that comes along with it is a valuable resource that assists with learning. As well as the web site that is given in the book can be used as a study guide. This is a must for all responders to medical incidents. This is the core information that all emergency providers really need to know because of the fact that it doesn't take that long to learn and that just a little knowledge can go a long way to save somebody's life. Even police officers should have a copy of this in their library and review it often.

Street Corner University
Brady - Prehospital Emergency Care, I have my own preference, I always read. This is the best Prentice Hall Product and have sixth edition. Text contains clear, step-by-step to education, picture or diagram is explanations with understandable material that is comprehensive, stimulating, and challenging enough to prepare , real on-the-job situations and attractive price.

Best-selling. It¡¦s because this book is not only suitable for EMT ¡V Basic. It¡¦s suitable for all. People want to study in any time, any elsewhere of life support. This book was considered the all resource for medical and trauma emergencies.

In this book train students to do thorough patient assessment. Because patient assessment is very important, use limit resource to save unlimit life. I think this book is leadership on this area. And expanded to include even more full-color art and photos of procedures and updated equipment, as well as new flowcharts illustrating assessment and care steps for various emergency situations. The authors also bring students up to date on new protocols that summarize cardiac arrest, pediatric emergencies, as well as many other crisis conditions. NEW twenty-six new assessment flowcharts illustrate care steps for breathing difficulty, cardiac compromise, diabetic emergencies, bleeding and shock, burns, head injuries, newborn resuscitation, and many more. NEW assessment protocols summarize emergency care for cardiac arrest, stroke, allergic reaction, near-drowning, abdominal injuries, and pediatric emergencies, among others. In-depth patient assessment-based approach presented in a clear, logical format. Case studies integrated throughout the text. Comprehensive, step-by-step coverage meets and exceeds the requirements of the D.O.T. EMT-B curriculum. NEW¡XNew, reader-friendly design highlights key information. Basic Life Support review and National Registry Skill Sheets are included. BLS review helps students recall material that should previously have been covered. National Registry Review Sheets help students prepare for the test they must pass to be certified EMT-B's.

The best innovative is provide weblinks with interactive education. Contains chapter-by-chapter review quizzes, message boards, chat rooms, and additional student and instructor resources. And ¡§Web Watch¡¨ icons throughout the text direct students to current websites that offer further discussion of chapter topics. I believe that is great imporve!

Programmer's Guide to Foxpro 2.6
Published in Paperback by Sybex (July, 1994)
Author: Howard Dickler
Average review score:

Excellent Book for anyone
This is the best book I have ever read on Foxpro.

A "How To" Book That Really Tells How TO
This is one of the best "how to" books I have ever read because it solves more mysteries than it creates.

I feel this book does an outstanding job of explaining the hybred (sort of) object oriented concept of the FoxPro Read Clause (event).

Having formally studied Visual Basic, I came to Foxpro as a refugee from DBASE (pre-windows) and found myself struggling to figure out what the events were and when they happened. This book cleared it all up for me.

Foxpro itself is a bit clutsy and obscure but this book explains even those parts instead of just leaving one to wonder how it is that the packaged sample code does what it does.
